Food & Water Watch calls aquaponics "Real Sustainable Fish Farming"

“There are other, truly more sustainable means of creating green jobs and increasing our domestic seafood supply to complement wild-catch fisheries without pushing historic fishermen out of business and without hurting ocean fish and wildlife. Some forms of shellfish can be farmed sustainably, including mussels, clams and oysters. Farming these species in some cases can help improve water quality and does not involve the use of wild fish feed and chemicals. There’s also a technology to grow fish on land in closed-loop, low-energy, high-yield operations that reuse nearly all the water initially put into the system. We need legislation to promote research and development of land-based recirculating aquaculture systems, which will create green jobs and increase our domestic seafood supply.”
